Frequently asked questions

  • Unfortunately I don’t accept insurance at this time but can provide Superbills and receipts of service.

  • Acupuncture is a modality of eastern Chinese medicine in which thin, sterile needles are inserted into the skin at certain points along meridians to promote a free flow of energy (Qi) and enables the body to heal itself and elicit a state of harmony and balance.

From a western medical perspective, when the needles are inserted into the skin, the needles connect with the body’s electrical “super highway” or the fascia, and engage with the body’s central and peripheral nervous systems to reduce inflammation, release serotonin, endorphins and other hormones to promote a healing response in the muscles and vital organ systems.

  • Needles are still needles. So you may feel a small pinch or a stronger sensation depending on the point location. But generally speaking, it shouldn’t hurt. What I would like you to feel is a deep achy sensation when the needle connects to your body. This is known as “de qi.” And it’s this “pulling” sensation that promotes the best healing response.

  • The number and frequency of treatments differ between each patient individually and what they need based on the condition being treated. Sadly, acupuncturists can’t predict the future and we don’t (yet) have a magic pill, but we work towards helping you heal quickly. Generally, if you’re dealing with fertility or menstrual issues, I like to see signs of change after the first three cycles.

  • Since this is a longer session, we will have more time to chat and get to know each other. During this time I will ask a lot of questions that may sound strange to you. I have different diagnostic practices which include looking at a patient’s tongue, feeling your wrist pulses and asking about your bowel movements! There is nothing to be nervous about. I am collecting data to see how your body is functioning. I will then put together a treatment plan for the first session and discuss treatments going forward. Each session may be different from the previous one as your body and needs may change.

  • What’s most important is that you are comfortable. I recommend loose-fitting pants that can roll above the knee (no yoga pants or pants with tight elastic around the ankles) or you can wear shorts and a loose-fitting tank top or t-shirt.

  • I will NOT treat you if you haven’t eaten at least 2 hours before treatment. Low blood sugar can slow your flow of blood, and acupuncture can further slow your nervous system and you may feel faint as a result. A simple snack before treatment such as nuts, an apple or protein bar is sufficient.
